What is a tithi?
A tithi is a lunar day. It is the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees further ahead of the Sun, so a lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in the bright half (Shukla Paksha, from Pratipada to Purnima) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna Paksha, from Pratipada to Amavasya). Because the Moon's speed varies, a tithi can be as short as about 19 hours or as long as about 26 hours.
How the day's tithi is decided
A panchang names each day by the tithi that is running at sunrise. When a tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, it never touches a sunrise; this is a kshaya (skipped) tithi, and it is observed on the day it falls in. When one tithi holds two sunrises, it is a vriddhi tithi and the same tithi names two days. Festivals and fasts sometimes follow other rules, such as the tithi at midnight or at moonrise, so a festival date can differ from the sunrise tithi.

How this is calculated
Sunrise and sunset are computed for the latitude and longitude of the city you choose, and the day and night are divided by the classical rule for each period. Tithi and nakshatra come from the Moon's and Sun's positions on the Swiss Ephemeris, with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa for sidereal values. Method reviewed by Dr. R.P.
