The five limbs of the Panchang
Panchang means "five limbs." Tithi is the lunar day — the angle between Moon and Sun in 12° steps, thirty across the month. Vaar is the weekday and its planetary lord. Nakshatra is the star the Moon occupies (27 in all, each 13°20'). Yoga is a Sun-plus-Moon combination (27 named yogas), and Karana is half a tithi (eleven karanas cycling). Read together they give the character of the day.
Why it is anchored to sunrise — and to your city
The panchang for a date is read at local sunrise. Because sunrise shifts with latitude and longitude, the tithi and nakshatra prevailing at sunrise — and every timing derived from them — genuinely differ from city to city. This tool computes from your city's real sunrise rather than copying one location's almanac, which is why it asks for your city.

How this is calculated
Sunrise and sunset are computed for the latitude and longitude of the city you choose, and the day and night are divided by the classical rule for each period. Tithi and nakshatra come from the Moon's and Sun's positions on the Swiss Ephemeris, with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa for sidereal values. Method reviewed by Dr. R.P. Sharma, Ph.D. and Acharya in Phalit Jyotish, practising Vedic astrology since 1979.

What are the five limbs of the panchang?

Why does the panchang change from city to city?
The Hindu day begins at local sunrise, and sunrise differs by place. The tithi or nakshatra running at sunrise — and timings such as Rahu Kaal — can therefore differ between cities on the same date.

What is Rahu Kaal today and what does it mean?
Rahu Kaal (also written Rahu Kalam) is a daily period of about 90 minutes, ruled by Rahu, that classical panchang tradition treats as inauspicious for starting new ventures — signing, launching, journeys, first payments. Routine ongoing work is fine during Rahu Kaal — the caution applies to fresh beginnings.
Is Rahu Kaal the same in every city?
