What the nakshatra is
The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into lunar mansions of 13°20′ each — a finer grid than the 12 signs, and older. Your janma nakshatra is the mansion the Moon occupied at your birth: it seeds the Vimshottari dasha (the timing backbone of the whole chart), guides marriage matching, and by tradition gives the first syllable of a child's name.
Pada — the quarter within the star
