What the nakshatra is
The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into lunar mansions of 13°20′ each — a finer grid than the 12 signs, and older. Your janma nakshatra is the mansion the Moon occupied at your birth: it seeds the Vimshottari dasha (the timing backbone of the whole chart), guides marriage matching, and by tradition gives the first syllable of a child's name.
Pada — the quarter within the star
Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′, and each pada carries its own naming syllable and navamsha placement. That is why two people of the same nakshatra can differ — the pada refines the reading. This calculator returns both, with the Moon's exact degree.

How this is calculated
Planet positions are computed in your browser with astronomical formulas that are checked every night against the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard used by professional astrology software. Sidereal positions use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard ayanamsa of Indian panchangs, and the birth time is converted from your city's own time zone. Method reviewed by Dr. R.P. What is a nakshatra pada?
Each nakshatra has four quarters (padas) of 3°20′. The pada refines everything the nakshatra indicates — including the traditional naming syllable and the navamsha position.
Which nakshatra decides a baby's name?

Do I need my exact birth time?
The Moon stays about one day in each nakshatra, so the time matters more than for the rashi. If you tick 'time unknown', the tool checks your date and tells you plainly whether your nakshatra is certain.
How long does the Moon stay in one nakshatra?
About a day. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ and the Moon covers roughly 12° to 15° a day, so it changes nakshatra about once every 24 hours and changes pada about every six hours.
Is my nakshatra the same as my rashi?
No. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in (one of 12, each 30°); the nakshatra is the finer lunar mansion within it (one of 27, each 13°20′). Each rashi holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so the calculator shows both.
