What the nakshatra is
The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into lunar mansions of 13°20′ each — a finer grid than the 12 signs, and older. Your janma nakshatra is the mansion the Moon occupied at your birth: it seeds the Vimshottari dasha (the timing backbone of the whole chart), guides marriage matching, and by tradition gives the first syllable of a child's name.
Pada — the quarter within the star
Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′, and each pada carries its own naming syllable and navamsha placement. That is why two people of the same nakshatra can differ — the pada refines the reading. This calculator returns both, with the Moon's exact degree.
