How is a baby’s name chosen by nakshatra?
In the namkaran tradition, the first syllable of the name comes from the baby’s janma nakshatra — the star the Moon occupied at birth — and from its pada, the quarter of that star. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has its own syllable, giving 108 in all.
Why does the pada matter?
The four padas of one nakshatra carry four different syllables, so the pada decides which letter the name starts with. The Moon changes pada about every six hours, which is why the birth time matters. If the time is unknown, the finder uses a noon chart and you can confirm the pada later.
What if the name you love starts differently?
Many families keep a nakshatra name for rituals and give the child another name for everyday use. The syllable is a tradition to follow where it suits the family, not a rule that brings harm if it is not followed. You can check any name against the nakshatra with the “Check this Name” box above.

How this is calculated
Planet positions are computed in your browser with astronomical formulas that are checked every night against the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard used by professional astrology software. Sidereal positions use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard ayanamsa of Indian panchangs, and the birth time is converted from your city's own time zone. Method reviewed by Dr. R.P.
