Baby Names by Rashi: Starting Letters for All 12 Moon Signs

What you need to know

Each rashi’s naming letters are simply its nakshatra-padas gathered together — Mesha holds Chu-Che-Cho-La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo-A, Vrishabha holds I-U-E-O-Va-Vi-Vu-Ve-Vo, and so on. Rashi-letters are the quick method; the nakshatra-pada is the precise one, because it points to ONE syllable instead of nine.

Why nakshatra beats rashi for naming

A rashi spans nine padas; naming by rashi means picking any of nine sounds. The Muhurta tradition’s actual prescription is the single pada syllable — the finer address. Use rashi letters when only the rashi is known; use the pada when birth details exist. The free tool handles both: full birth details give the exact pada; the dropdown gives any nakshatra directly.

Rashi letters and the naam-rashi doctrine

The reason these letters echo through life: whenever a kundli is unavailable, pandits reverse the process and read the person’s working rashi FROM the name’s first letter. Choose the letter well once, and every future ritual stays aligned — the deeper doctrine is covered in the naam-rashi guide in this series.

Common Questions

Can I name my baby by rashi instead of nakshatra?

Yes — rashi letters are a valid quick method, since they are the union of the rashi's nakshatra padas. The pada syllable is simply more precise: one sound instead of nine.

My baby's rashi and nakshatra suggest different letters — which wins?

They cannot truly conflict: the pada syllable always lies WITHIN the rashi's letter set. If a list you read disagrees, it is using a variant table — the pada remains the finer standard.

Where do I find the exact pada?

The syllable is the doorway; the full kundli tells the story — Gand Mool pada-check, name harmony and the child’s first dasha. That is the consultation.
