What you need to know

Janma rashi is the Moon’s sign at birth — the true reference wherever birth details exist. Naam rashi is derived from the name’s first letter — the tradition’s fallback wherever they don’t. The working doctrine: janma rashi when the kundli is known; naam rashi when only the name is. And if the name was chosen by the pada syllable, the two coincide — which is precisely why the naming syllable matters.

Where each rashi applies

Janma rashi governs: the kundli itself, dasha reading, Sade Sati, gochar (transits), matching when birth details exist — everything computed from the chart. Naam rashi serves: daily rashifal read casually, temple sankalpa where birth details are unknown, matching when one side has no kundli, and public rituals. Kerala and parts of the south lean naam-rashi for worship; the north leans janma-rashi — both are legitimate lineages.

The beautiful design: name as backup kundli

The rishis built redundancy: choose the name by the janma nakshatra’s pada sound, and the name silently CARRIES the rashi. Generations later, a pandit who knows only the name can still recover the working rashi from its first letter — the name is a one-syllable backup of the birth chart. This is why casual modern names that ignore the syllable break the chain: the naam rashi then points somewhere the Moon never was.

When they disagree — the honest resolution

If a person’s name wasn’t chosen by pada, naam rashi and janma rashi differ. The rule of thumb the classics support: for anything computed (dasha, transit, matching with kundli) the janma rashi ALWAYS wins; for sankalpa and casual rashifal, use whichever the family tradition consistently follows. Consistency matters more than the choice — switching frames mid-way is the real error.

Common Questions

My rashifal by name and by birth differ — which do I read?

If you know your birth details, the janma-rashi rashifal is yours. The naam-rashi version exists for the crores who don't know their birth time — a thoughtful fallback, not a competitor.

Which rashi is used for kundli matching?

Janma rashi and janma nakshatra, always, when kundlis exist. Naam rashi enters matching only when one side has no birth details at all.

Can I make my child's naam rashi and janma rashi the same?

Yes — that is the whole point of naming by the nakshatra-pada syllable. The free Baby Name Finder gives that exact syllable in seconds.

The syllable is the doorway; the full kundli tells the story — Gand Mool pada-check, name harmony and the child’s first dasha. That is the consultation.
