What the Rahu-Ketu axis actually is
Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun, which is why they always fall exactly 180 degrees apart and why every chart shows them moving backwards through the zodiac.
Because they are always opposite, they never occupy one house — they occupy two, facing each other. Classical reading treats the Rahu side as the direction of appetite, ambition and unfamiliar territory, and the Ketu side as the direction of things already learned, where interest falls away easily.
What the birth time changes
The sign and nakshatra of both nodes need only your birth date — the nodes move slowly, roughly one sign every eighteen months. The house placement needs your birth time, because houses are measured from the ascendant, which shifts about one sign every two hours. If you don't know your time, the tool still shows signs and nakshatras and simply omits the houses rather than guessing them.
A note on fear
Every chart ever cast contains Rahu and Ketu. Their presence is not a flaw and not a dosha by itself. What a chart reading looks at is where that axis falls, what it touches, and which dasha is running — which is judgement about a whole chart, not a verdict from one placement.
Rahu and Ketu in each house
Because the two nodes are always exactly opposite, there are only six axes. Rahu shows where the person reaches and is never quite satisfied; Ketu, seven houses away, shows what already comes easily and is taken lightly. These are the classical themes — the sign, the nakshatra, the lords of the two houses and the running dasha decide how strongly any of it shows.

Rahu and Ketu: the difference
Rahu, the north node, is where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's going north; Ketu, the south node, is the opposite crossing. In Jyotish Rahu is desire, amplification and the unfamiliar — it magnifies whatever it touches. Ketu is detachment, past skill and the spiritual — it withdraws interest from its house and gives insight in return. Both are shadow grahas: they have no body of their own and give the results of the sign lord and of the planets they sit with.
Rahu is currently transiting Kumbha (Aquarius) and Ketu Simha (Leo); on 5 December 2026 Rahu moves into Makara (Capricorn) and Ketu into Karka (Cancer) by the mean node most published panchangs use (25 November 2026 by the true node this calculator shows), where they stay until mid-2028.
Traditional remedies for Rahu and Ketu
Remedies are chosen for the chart, not for the placement alone. The traditional ones are the beej mantras — for Rahu ‘Om Bhram Bhreem Bhroum Sah Rahave Namah’, for Ketu ‘Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah’, usually 108 times — Durga worship for Rahu and Ganesha worship for Ketu, and charity on Saturdays (Rahu) or Tuesdays (Ketu).
Hessonite (gomed) for Rahu and cat's eye (lehsunia) for Ketu are the traditional stones, but a node's stone is never worn on the placement alone: it can intensify a Rahu or Ketu that is already strong. Have the full chart examined first.

Is a Rahu-Ketu placement something to be afraid of?
No. The nodes appear in every chart without exception, so their presence is not a defect. Classical texts treat them as indicators of where effort and learning are concentrated in a life. Strength or difficulty depends on the whole chart, not on the nodes in isolation.
