Rising Sign (Lagna) Calculator
Also called: ascendant calculator · rising sign · udaya lagna · janma lagna by date, time and place
Instant and free — no signup, nothing stored. The lagna is computed in your browser on the same sidereal (Lahiri) engine as this site's full kundli tool — which is also completely free, PDF included.
Why the lagna is the chart's frame
The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — the first house, from which every other house is counted. It shapes constitution, temperament and the chart's whole orientation: two people with identical planets but different lagnas live different charts. It moves through all twelve signs every day, changing roughly every two hours — which is why the exact birth time matters here more than anywhere else in Jyotish.
Vedic vs Western ascendant
Western calculators return a tropical ascendant; this tool returns the sidereal lagna used in Vedic astrology, about 24° earlier — so a Western "Leo rising" is often a Vedic Karka (Cancer) lagna. Both are computed correctly; they measure against different zodiacs.
Uncertain birth time?
If your recorded time might be off by more than a few minutes, treat the result as provisional — and know that a lost or doubtful birth time can be reconstructed: birth-time rectification works backward from major life events to fix the lagna. This is done in consultation. Meanwhile, your moon sign and nakshatra are far less time-sensitive.
Frequently asked questions
What is my rising sign in Vedic astrology?
Your rising sign (lagna) is the zodiac sign that was climbing the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment, measured in the sidereal zodiac. It is the first house of your kundli — enter your birth details above for the instant answer.
Why does the lagna need my exact birth time?
The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so even a 15-minute error can move it. If your time is approximate, treat the result as provisional; a birth-time rectification consultation can settle it.
Why is my Vedic rising sign different from Western sites?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha), about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac Western calculators use — so your Vedic lagna is often one sign earlier than a Western 'ascendant' result.
Lagna, moon sign, sun sign — which matters most?
In Vedic practice the lagna frames the whole chart (health, self, direction), the moon sign carries mind and dashas, and the sun sign is one planet among nine. A full reading weighs all three — the free kundli gives you the complete picture.

About Dr. Sharma's Experience
What does a rising sign (Lagna) calculator actually do?
A rising sign calculator determines your Lagna, the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time. It uses your birth date, exact time, and location in the standard Lagna calculation method from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Accurate birth time is essential because even a one-minute error can shift the Lagna by an entire sign. Without correct time, the entire horoscope’s balance changes.
Can I rely on an online rising sign calculator alone for my horoscope?
No. A calculator gives the rising sign, but the full horoscope requires planetary positions (Grahas) in houses (Bhavas), aspects (Drishti), and dashas (timing periods). Use the rising sign as the first step, then build the complete chart with planetary longitudes and nakshatras for reliable analysis. A partial chart risks misinterpreting the Lagna’s strength and role.
How do I know if an astrologer is genuine and experienced?
Look for clear references to traditional methods: Parashari system, use of dashas (Vimshottari or Yogini), nakshatra analysis, and classical yogas like Gajakesari or Pancha Mahapurusha. Ask how they determine the rising sign from your birth data and whether they cross-check the time with planetary positions in the Lagna house (usually the first house). A practitioner who explains these steps in plain terms is more reliable.
What qualities make a Vedic astrologer trustworthy?
A trustworthy astrologer uses your exact birth details, explains results in terms of planets, houses, and dashas, and avoids vague predictions. They should mention remedies only after analyzing afflictions—never prescribe gemstones or mantras without identifying the planet involved and its functional role in your chart. Transparency about the astrological reasoning matters more than any claim of authority.
How can I verify an astrologer’s accuracy without personal history?
Request a simple verification reading: provide your birth data and ask them to identify the strongest planet (Atmakaraka), your Moon sign, and the lord of the 7th house. If they can do so without hesitation and explain their significance, it shows competence. Avoid practitioners who rely on pre-written generic predictions or avoid giving clear, chart-specific answers.
Does a rising sign calculator tell me about my career or marriage?
No. The rising sign only sets the frame of the chart; career and marriage depend on the planets occupying the 10th and 7th houses and their lords. A weak or afflicted lord of the 7th in the 8th house, for example, suggests delayed or challenging partnerships. The rising sign alone cannot answer such questions—only the full chart can.
Is the rising sign always the same as the Moon sign?
Not usually. The rising sign is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth, while the Moon sign is where the Moon is placed. They coincide only when the Moon is in the same sign as the Lagna. If the Moon is in a different sign, the two signs carry different energies: the Lagna reflects personality, while the Moon sign reflects emotions and mind.
What classical remedy can help strengthen a weak rising sign lord?
First, identify the lord of your rising sign and see if it is placed weakly or afflicted. If so, chant its bija mantra daily: “Om” followed by the planet’s seed syllable (e.g., “Sreem” for Moon, “Dreem” for Jupiter). A simple charity like donating the planet’s associated item (white clothes for Moon, yellow fruits for Jupiter) can also help, but only after confirming the planet’s role in your chart.
