What Mangal Dosha (being Manglik) means
Mangal Dosha — being Manglik — is when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from three reference points: the ascendant (lagna), the Moon, and Venus. Mars is the planet of drive and heat; in these houses tradition reads it as pressure on marriage, temperament or the marital home, which is why charts are checked for it before a match is fixed.
Why this tool checks three reference points
A serious Manglik check never looks only from the lagna. This calculator reports Mars from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus separately — because the dosha is counted as present if Mars falls in those houses from any of them, and its weight differs depending on which. The 7th (marriage) and 8th (longevity of the union) placements are treated as the heaviest.
Cancellations — why "Manglik" is rarely the whole story
Classical astrology lists many cancellations (Mangal Dosha Bhanga): Mars in its own or exalted sign, particular houses, benefic aspects on Mars, or both partners carrying the dosha. Any of these can soften or nullify it. This is exactly why a raw "yes, Manglik" should never end a conversation — the strength and the cancellations decide what it actually means, and that needs a chart reading.
What it means for marriage
Being Manglik is not a barrier to a happy marriage. It is one factor among many in compatibility, and a Manglik can marry a non-Manglik when the overall match and Mars's strength support it. The honest answer comes from weighing both charts together, not from the label — which is what a matching consultation does.

When Mangal dosha is cancelled (parihar)
The calculator shows where Mars sits from your lagna, Moon and Venus. Classical texts then list situations in which the dosha is considered cancelled or much reduced. The ones most widely accepted are:
- Both partners are Manglik, so the dosha is matched.
- Mars is in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara).
- Mars is joined or aspected by Jupiter.
Texts differ on further exceptions for particular signs and houses, which is why a cancellation should be confirmed on the full chart, together with the 7th house and the Navamsa, before any decision about marriage.
How this is calculated
