What the Vimshottari Mahadasha is
The Vimshottari dasha is Vedic astrology's master timing system — a 120-year cycle in which nine planets take turns as the ruling influence of your life. Each ruling period is a mahadasha: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Which dasha you are born into — and how much of it remains — is fixed by the Moon's exact position in its nakshatra at your birth, which is why the birth time and place matter.
How to read your timeline
The mahadasha does not force events; it sets the theme. A Venus period colours life with relationships, comfort and creativity; Saturn brings structure, duty and slow, durable results; Rahu accelerates ambition and change. Whether a period feels supportive or testing depends on that planet's condition in your chart — its house, sign, aspects and strength. Two people in the same mahadasha can live very different years.
Why timing matters more than prediction
Most questions people bring to astrology — when will marriage happen, when will career move, when does a difficult phase end — are dasha questions. Knowing your current mahadasha and its antardasha (sub-periods) turns vague worry into a calendar you can plan around. The free 90-page kundli report on this site includes your full antardasha table alongside this timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which mahadasha is running for me right now?
Enter your date, time and place of birth above — the calculator highlights the mahadasha running today, with its start and end dates, computed from the Moon's exact nakshatra position at your birth.
What is the order of the Vimshottari mahadashas?
The fixed sequence is Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19) and Mercury (17) — a 120-year cycle. Your starting point in the cycle depends on your janma nakshatra.
Is Sade Sati the same as a Saturn mahadasha?
No. Sade Sati is Saturn's transit over your natal Moon (about 7.5 years), while the Saturn mahadasha is a 19-year period in the Vimshottari cycle. They can overlap, but they are different systems — check Sade Sati with our free Sade Sati calculator.
Can a mahadasha be good or bad by itself?
Not by itself. The same Rahu dasha that unsettles one chart can raise another to sudden success — it depends on the planet's placement, dignity and aspects in your individual kundli. The dasha names the theme; your chart decides the tone.
