Maha Shivratri 2027: Date, Nishita Puja and the Great Night of Shiva
Maha Shivratri 2027 falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027, the "Great Night of Shiva", the most significant night of the year for devotees of Lord Shiva.
The night-long vigil
Devotees fast and keep a night vigil, worshipping the Shivling through the four prahars (quarters) of the night with water, milk and bilva leaves, and the chant of Om Namah Shivaya. The most powerful window is the Nishita Kaal around midnight.
Its meaning
Maha Shivratri marks, by tradition, the union of Shiva and Shakti and the stilling of the restless mind, a night for inner awakening rather than mere ritual.
Shivratri is the one night we are asked to stay awake, within as much as without.
