Krishna Janmashtami 2026 falls on Saturday, 05 September 2026. The governing tithi — the midnight birth of Shri Krishna on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami — runs from 04-09-2026 02:26 IST to 05-09-2026 00:14 IST, computed from the ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the way a Panchang actually derives it. The observance follows nishita (true midnight).

Why is Janmashtami observed at midnight?

Because that is when Krishna is traditionally held to have been born. The observance is timed to nishita kaal — the middle portion of the night — rather than to any convenient hour, which is why the fast is broken then and not at sunset. Nishita kaal is computed from your own local sunset and sunrise, so it differs by city.

Does the date differ outside India?

It can. Janmashtami is fixed by the Krishna Ashtami tithi of Bhadrapada, and a tithi is a precise instant rather than a day. Which local date that instant falls on depends on your time zone, so families abroad sometimes observe a day either side of India. Both are correct — use your own city’s panchang.

Why the tithi window matters more than the date

A Hindu festival is not a civil date; it is a tithi caught at a particular quality of time — nishita (true midnight) here. When the tithi straddles two days, the rule decides the day, which is why two neighbouring calendars sometimes disagree while both cite the same sky.
