Tulsi (Tulasi) is worshipped as Vishnupriya, dear to Lord Vishnu, and as a form of Goddess Lakshmi. The simplest daily mantra is “Om Tulasyai Namah”. A widely recited stuti is: “Mahaprasada janani, sarva saubhagya vardhini, adhi vyadhi hara nityam, Tulasi tvam namostute” — “Mother of great grace, giver of all good fortune, remover of worry and illness, Tulasi, I bow to you.”
Mantras
- Om Tulasyai Namah — simple daily salutation.
- Mahaprasada janani… — the stuti above, recited while offering water.
- Om Vrindayai Namah — Vrinda is another name of Tulsi.
Daily method
- Morning, after a bath: offer water at the root and chant the stuti.
- Apply a little kumkum or haldi, offer a flower and do a few rounds (parikrama).
- Evening: light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp near the plant.
Traditional rules
- Leaves are not plucked on Sundays, Ekadashi or Dwadashi, or after sunset, by family custom in many homes.
- Pluck gently with clean hands and offer leaves to Vishnu or Krishna; Tulsi is not offered to Ganesha by tradition.
- Keep the plant in the north, north-east or east, in clean surroundings.
Tulsi Vivah
Tulsi’s ceremonial marriage to Shaligram (Vishnu) is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi — in 2026 on Saturday, 21 November — and opens the wedding season.
