Who is Varahi?

• One of the Seven Mothers (Sapta Matrikas), the energy of Varaha.
• In Sri Vidya she is Dandanatha, the general of Lalita Tripurasundari’s forces.
• She is shown boar-faced, holding a plough and pestle among other weapons, often seated on a buffalo.
• She is worshipped for protection, victory over obstacles and stability of home and land.

The mantra

The full moola mantra is long and is taught with its method by a teacher. For daily devotion, the name-mantra is enough:

Om Varahyai Namah — “Om, I bow to Varahi.”

Be cautious of short “moola mantras” circulating online that merely string her name with the words “moola mantra”; they are not traditional.

When to chant

• Panchami tithi (fifth lunar day) is her traditional day.
• Evening or night worship is customary.
• Varahi Navaratri, kept in the Ashadha Gupt Navratri in parts of south India, is the yearly festival.
