The Varaha Gayatri is a prayer in the Gayatri meter to Varaha, Vishnu’s boar avatar who rescued the Earth (Bhudevi) from the cosmic ocean and defeated the demon Hiranyaksha. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names Varaha as the avatar of Rahu, so the mantra is used as a remedy in difficult Rahu periods and for disputes over land and property.
Who is Varaha?
When the demon Hiranyaksha dragged the Earth into the depths of the cosmic ocean, Vishnu took the form of a great boar, dived in, killed the demon and lifted the Earth on his tusks. Varaha is therefore honoured as protector of land and stability.
Why Jyotish links Varaha with Rahu
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra pairs each planet with an avatar of Vishnu: Rama with the Sun, Krishna with the Moon, Narasimha with Mars, Buddha with Mercury, Vamana with Jupiter, Parashurama with Venus, Kurma with Saturn, Varaha with Rahu and Matsya with Ketu. So Varaha worship is used as a gentle remedy for Rahu.
