Kendras are the houses of power; trikonas the houses of fortune. When one planet owns a kendra, another owns a trikona, and they conjoin, exchange signs or aspect each other, position and fortune fuse. The lagna lord participating strengthens it further, since the lagna is both kendra and trikona.
Which Raj Yogas matter most in practice?
Three families do the real work: the kendra-trikona combinations; the Vipreet Raj Yogas (rise through adversity); and the Panch Mahapurusha yogas (one dignified planet in a kendra). Dozens of minor named yogas exist, but these three families decide most careers.
Why do most you-have-Raj-Yoga claims disappoint?

Can Raj Yoga be cancelled by functional malefics?
Yes. If the functional malefic (e.g., 3rd or 6th lord) occupies the same house as the yoga planet or aspects it closely, it can create obstacles during its mahadasha. Classical shanti measures include worship of the deity of the afflicting house, wearing the appropriate color for the functional malefic on Saturday or Tuesday, and fasting on its tithi to reduce the cancellation effect.
