Makar Sankranti 2027: Date, Significance and the Sun's Northward Turn

By Astrologer Dr. R.P. Sharma  ·  May 2026  ·  5 min read

Makar Sankranti 2027 is observed in mid-January 2027 (around 14-15 January), when the Sun enters Capricorn (Makara) and begins its northward journey, Uttarayana.

A solar festival

Unlike most Hindu festivals, Makar Sankranti follows the solar calendar, which is why it falls on nearly the same date each year. It is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, alongside Lohri in the north, as Bihu in Assam and Uttarayan in Gujarat, with kite-flying, til-gud sweets and holy dips.

Astrological note

The Sun's entry into Capricorn is an auspicious turning point, traditionally ending the inauspicious Kharmas and reopening muhurats for weddings and ceremonies.

As the Sun turns north, tradition says the season of new beginnings returns.
