Grahan 2027: All Five Eclipses and Which One India Sees
The complete, ephemeris-computed Grahan 2027 in India list — all five eclipses, IST timings, city-wise visibility and sutak is the main page.
The short answer
2027 has five eclipses — two solar and three lunar — but only ONE is a grahan for ritual purposes in India: the total solar eclipse of Monday, 2 August 2027, seen from India as a partial phase. The annular solar eclipse of 6 February is not visible from India at all, and all three lunar eclipses (20 February, 18 July, 17 August) are penumbral — the faintest kind, traditionally not treated as grahan. Sutak in 2027 therefore applies on 2 August only.
The 2027 grahan list
| Date | Type | Where visible | For India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat, 6 Feb 2027 | Annular Solar (Surya Grahan) | South America, Antarctica, western Africa | Not visible in India — no sutak |
| Sat, 20 Feb 2027 | Penumbral Lunar (Chandra) | Americas, Europe, Africa, west Asia | Penumbral — not treated as grahan |
| Sun, 18 Jul 2027 | Penumbral Lunar (Chandra) | Africa, Asia, Australia | Penumbral — not treated as grahan |
| Mon, 2 Aug 2027 | Total Solar (Surya Grahan) | Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia — partial phase from India | Visible — sutak applies |
| Tue, 17 Aug 2027 | Penumbral Lunar (Chandra) | Americas, Europe, Africa | Penumbral — not treated as grahan |
Why only one of the five counts here
A year with five eclipses sounds eventful, and most listings present all five as equally significant. For anyone in India keeping the tradition, four of them are not.
The rule is simple and old: sutak is observed only where an eclipse is actually visible. An eclipse happening over the far side of the earth has no ritual bearing here. That removes the 6 February annular solar eclipse, whose path runs over South America and western Africa.
The three lunar eclipses are removed for a different reason. All three are penumbral — the Moon passes only through Earth’s faint outer shadow, never the dark umbra. The dimming is usually too slight to notice with the naked eye, and classical practice treats umbral eclipses, partial or total, as grahan rather than penumbral ones.
That leaves 2 August 2027. Elsewhere it is the headline eclipse of the century — about six minutes twenty-three seconds of totality across Spain, North Africa, Luxor and Saudi Arabia. India sits well off the path of totality and sees a modest partial phase, roughly 15:34 to 17:53 IST, covering around 8% of the Sun at Delhi. Modest to look at, but it is the one eclipse of 2027 that carries sutak here.
What sutak means in practice
For a solar eclipse, sutak traditionally begins about twelve hours before the eclipse itself; for a lunar eclipse, about nine. Temples commonly close for that period and reopen once the eclipse has ended. Cooking and eating are avoided, and the time is given to japa, mantra and quiet. A bath is taken afterwards, and daan is offered.
None of this applies on the four other 2027 dates. Where an eclipse is not visible, the tradition does not ask you to observe it.
Frequently asked questions
How many eclipses are there in 2027?
Five — two solar and three lunar. The solar eclipses are an annular on 6 February and a total on 2 August. All three lunar eclipses (20 February, 18 July, 17 August) are penumbral, the faintest type.
Which grahan is visible in India in 2027?
Only the solar eclipse of Monday, 2 August 2027, and from India only its partial phase — roughly 15:34 to 17:53 IST, with about 8% of the Sun covered at Delhi. The 6 February annular solar eclipse is not visible from India at all.
When does sutak apply in 2027?
On 2 August 2027 only, since sutak is observed only where an eclipse is actually visible. For a solar eclipse sutak traditionally begins about 12 hours before the eclipse. The other four eclipses of 2027 either miss India entirely or are penumbral.
Are penumbral lunar eclipses counted as grahan?
Generally no. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon passes only through Earth's faint outer shadow, and the dimming is so slight it is often not visible to the naked eye. Classical practice treats umbral (partial and total) lunar eclipses as grahan, not penumbral ones.
What is special about the 2 August 2027 eclipse?
It is the longest land totality of this century — about 6 minutes 23 seconds — along a path crossing Spain, North Africa, Luxor in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. India sees only a modest partial phase, but it is the one eclipse of 2027 that carries ritual significance here.
An eclipse falls on everyone; how it touches your chart depends on where it lands in your houses. Dr. R.P. Sharma reads every chart personally, practising since 1979.

About Dr. Sharma's Experience
What are the lunar and solar eclipses expected in India during 2027?
In 2027 India will see two eclipses: a total lunar eclipse on 28 August 2026 at 01:06 IST and a partial solar eclipse on 11 August 2027 at 16:40 IST. These grahas occur when Sun-Moon nodes (Rahu-Ketu) align closely with the lunar or solar disc, marking the exact timing of eclipse contact.
What is the precise grahan time in India on 28 August 2026?
The total lunar eclipse on 28 August 2026 begins at 01:06 IST in India, reaches maximum at 01:47 IST, and ends at 02:27 IST. The eclipse is visible across the entire country, so planetary effects will be felt nationwide in the lunar-sign it occupies.
Is there a grahan in August 2026 other than the lunar eclipse?
No. In August 2026 India experiences only the one total lunar eclipse on 28 August; there is no solar eclipse that month. Lunar eclipses occur at full Moon (Purnima) when Moon is opposite Sun, directly aligned with Rahu-Ketu axis.
How accurate are astrological predictions in practice?
Astrological predictions are as accurate as the precision of the birth data and the skill of the astrologer. In my practice since 1979 I have repeatedly seen that when lagna, Moon sign, and planetary strengths (shadbala) are correctly noted, the dasa system (vimshottari or jaimini) reliably indicates timing of events to within months, not years.
Can astrology change destiny, or does it only guide?
Astrology maps karma through planetary positions; it does not override karma but shows where free will can modify outcome. For example, if Saturn in the 7th house indicates delays in marriage, wearing a flawless blue sapphire (after proper testing) and reciting Vishnu Sahasranama can shift timing by reducing the malefic influence.
Is Vedic astrology more reliable than Western astrology?
Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses sidereal zodiac, nakshatras, and precise dasa systems that classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra codify. These features give it a stronger grip on timing of events compared with tropical-based Western systems, especially for marriage, children, and career matters.
What should I do if an astrologer’s prediction turns out incorrect?
Recheck birth details first; a difference of minutes can shift a house cusp or Moon sign. Then review the dasa-bukti used; if the mahadasa planet is retrograde or combust, its promise may delay. Finally, perform a simple remedy like lighting a sesame-oil lamp on Saturday or reciting the concerned graha’s beej mantra once to neutralise minor timing errors.
