Grahan 2026 & 2027 in India: Dates, Times & Visibility

2026 had two eclipses in August and India saw neither. The surya grahan fell on 12 August (maximum 11:15 PM IST) and the chandra grahan on 28 August (maximum 9:42 AM IST) — one at night, one in daylight, so no sutak applied in India for either. The next one India will see is 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse that is partial here, and that one does carry sutak.

How eclipses are read in Vedic astrology

In classical Vedic astrology (Medini Jyotish), a grahan carries ritual weight — sutak, fasting windows, temple timings — only in the regions where it is actually visible. An eclipse that occurs while the Sun or Moon is below the horizon in India is astronomically real but ritually a normal day here. That is why several 2026 eclipses, though widely reported, do not trigger sutak for anyone in India.

Which 2026 eclipses matter for India

Of the 2026 eclipses, the 3 March total lunar eclipse is the one visible from parts of India, so sutak applies where it can be seen. The February and August solar eclipses and the 28 August partial lunar eclipse are not visible from India, so no sutak applies here — the IST times are simply the world event on our clock.
