The Matsya Gayatri is a prayer in the Gayatri meter to Matsya, Vishnu’s first avatar, the great fish who saved the sage-king Manu, the seeds of life and the Vedas from the cosmic flood. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names Matsya as the avatar of Ketu, so the mantra is used as a remedy in difficult Ketu periods and for a sense of being lost or adrift.
Who is Matsya?
A tiny fish asked King Manu for protection; it kept growing until Manu knew it was Vishnu. The fish warned of a great flood, told Manu to build a boat with the seven sages and the seeds of all life, and towed it to safety, also recovering the Vedas from the demon Hayagriva.
Why Jyotish links Matsya with Ketu
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra pairs each planet with an avatar of Vishnu: Rama with the Sun, Krishna with the Moon, Narasimha with Mars, Buddha with Mercury, Vamana with Jupiter, Parashurama with Venus, Kurma with Saturn, Varaha with Rahu and Matsya with Ketu. So Matsya worship is used as a gentle remedy for Ketu.
