The Twelve Bhavas: What Each House in Your Kundli Governs

The twelve bhavas (houses) of the Vedic birth chart divide life into twelve domains, from the self and body to foreign lands and liberation. Understanding what each house governs is the starting point for reading any kundli; understanding how houses relate to each other — through the kendra-kona-dusthana classification — is what makes chart interpretation systematic rather than fragmented.

The house classification

Houses are not equal in their basic quality. Kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the pillars of the chart — the strongest positional houses, where planets become most effective. Trikona houses (1st, 5th, 9th) are the fortune houses, where planets bring their best results; the 1st house is both kendra and trikona, which is why the lagna lord is almost always a benefic influence. Dusthana houses (6th, 8th, 12th) are houses of difficulty, where planets often produce challenging results, though each also has a higher dimension (6th: service and health detail; 8th: transformation and longevity; 12th: liberation and foreign residence).

Each house at a glance

1st (Lagna / Tanu Bhava): Self, body, appearance, early childhood, overall life direction, vitality. The chart's anchor.

2nd (Dhana Bhava): Wealth, family, speech, food, eyes, accumulated resources, face, early education.

3rd (Sahaja Bhava): Courage, siblings, communication, short travel, skills, effort, hands, media, writing.

4th (Sukha Bhava): Mother, home, vehicles, immovable property, happiness, chest, emotional foundation.

5th (Putra Bhava): Children, intelligence, creativity, romance, past-life merit (purva punya), speculation, mantra.

6th (Ripu Bhava): Enemies, illness, debt, legal disputes, service, digestive system, daily work, competitors.

7th (Kalatra Bhava): Marriage, partnership, the public, trade, long-distance travel, spouse's nature.

8th (Ayu Bhava): Longevity, transformation, hidden wealth, inheritance, the occult, chronic illness, research.

9th (Dharma Bhava): Fortune, father, religion, higher learning, philosophy, long journeys, guru, law.

10th (Karma Bhava): Career, status, authority, public reputation, government, actions in the world, father (secondary).

11th (Labha Bhava): Gains, income, elder siblings, friends, social networks, left ear, fulfilment of desires.

12th (Vyaya Bhava): Expenditure, loss, foreign lands, isolation, liberation, sleep, feet, foreign residence.

House lords and their placement

Each house is governed by its lord — the planet that rules the sign occupying that house. Where the lord is placed tells you the story: the 7th lord in the 10th house suggests career through partnerships; the 10th lord in the 12th suggests career connected to foreign work, isolation, or hospitality.
