Chevvai dosham is the Tamil name for Mangal (Mars) dosha. In Tamil practice it is checked with Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the ascendant, and also from the Moon and Venus. It has many exceptions, and when both partners have it, it is usually treated as balanced. Pariharam centres on Murugan worship and Mars mantras on Tuesdays.
How Chevvai dosham is checked
- Find Mars in your jathagam (birth chart).
- Count the house from the lagna (ascendant), then from the Moon (rasi) and from Venus.
- Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from any of these is Chevvai dosham; from the lagna it carries the most weight.
North Indian practice also counts the 1st house; Tamil practice usually does not.
Common exceptions
- Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation sign (Capricorn).
- Mars joined or aspected by Jupiter, or joined by the Moon.
- Both bride and groom have Chevvai dosham of similar strength — then it is treated as matched.
- Weak Mars by sign or very early or late degree is taken as mild.
Because these exceptions are common, many charts flagged by software do not carry a real dosham.
Effect on marriage
The traditional reading is friction, impatience and quarrels in married life, or delay in marriage. It is never a reason on its own to reject a match; the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the dashas of both charts decide.
Pariharam (remedies)
- Murugan worship on Tuesdays; Skanda Sashti and Kiruthigai vratham are traditional.
- Chevvai (Angaraka) mantra Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, 108 times on Tuesdays.
- Donate red lentils (masoor dal) or red cloth on Tuesdays.
- A carefully chosen wedding muhurat. Red coral only after a full chart check.
