How much does an inexact birth time actually matter?

You will read that fifteen minutes can change your rashi. That is true only in a narrow case, and it is worth being precise about, because the vague version makes people abandon a reading they could perfectly well have.

So: fifteen minutes moves the Moon about eight arc-minutes. That changes your rashi only if you were born within eight arc-minutes of a sign boundary — a window of roughly a quarter of an hour out of every 54 hours. For most people an approximate birth time gives the correct rashi with no difficulty. If your recorded time falls close to a boundary the chart will show it, and that is exactly when the time is worth confirming from a birth record.

What your rashi actually determines

The Moon sign is usually described in terms of emotional nature, which is true but incomplete. Its more consequential function is structural:

• Your janma nakshatra. The Moon’s exact degree fixes which of the 27 nakshatras you were born under, and which of its four padas. This is finer and more informative than the rashi alone.
• Your entire Vimshottari dasha sequence. The nakshatra decides which planetary period you were born into and therefore the order and dates of every mahadasha that follows — the whole 120-year timeline. Nothing else in the chart sets that.
• Guna milan in marriage matching. Nadi, Bhakoot, Gana and the rest are scored from the two nakshatras, not from the rashis.
• Which rashifal applies to you. Indian daily and yearly predictions are written for the Moon sign, not the Sun sign — which is why Western horoscopes so often fail to fit.
