What is Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is the Ashadha full moon, kept to honour one’s teachers. It is also called Vyasa Purnima: tradition holds it as the birth day of Veda Vyasa, who arranged the Vedas and composed the Mahabharata.
Astronomically, every Purnima is the moment the Moon stands opposite the Sun. At Guru Purnima the Sun is near the end of Mithuna or the start of Karka, so the full Moon falls in Dhanu or Makara — usually in Purva Ashadha or Uttara Ashadha nakshatra.
