How Vishwakarma Puja is done

2. Install the image: Vishwakarma, the divine architect, is shown with his elephant, holding tools, a measuring rod and a scripture; a kalash is placed before him.
3. Puja of the tools: tilak, flowers and a sacred thread on every tool and machine, with the worker's own tools placed at the altar.
4. Prasad and rest: the prasad is shared with every worker; the workshop takes the day off, and in many factories the day ends with a meal together.

Vishwakarma is the architect of the gods: the Puranas credit him with Dwarka, Indraprastha, Lanka, the weapons of the gods and the chariots of the Sun. He is the patron of every craft that shapes material, from carpentry and metalwork to engineering, so the day is kept by artisans, engineers, factory workers, drivers and anyone whose living depends on tools, asking that the work be safe, skilful and productive in the year ahead.

• Parts of North India: Vishwakarma Puja is kept on the day after Diwali, with Govardhan Puja, in the Kartik tradition.
