Vastu for Work: Office, Shop and the Home Desk

Work has moved — from the shop to the office to the spare bedroom — and every move brings the same questions to my desk: where should I sit, which way should I face, where does the cash go? Workplace vastu is home vastu with the emphasis shifted from rest to command: stability behind the one who decides, openness before the work, and the treasury in the direction that holds. Here are the load-bearing rules for all three settings.

The owner's seat: command from the south-west

In any workplace the decision-maker sits in the south-west zone, facing north or east — the same stability logic that places the master bedroom, translated to command. A solid wall behind the chair (never a window or an open passage at the back), the room's entrance visible from the seat, and the heaviest cabinetry sharing the south-west with the sitter. Senior staff follow the same grammar westward and southward; teams doing outward-facing, mobile work — sales, logistics — sit well in the north-west, the air corner that favours movement. The one arrangement to avoid for anyone who must think: back to the door, face to the wall — a posture that no shastra and no nervous system has ever endorsed.

Money's address: the safe and the cash counter

Tradition gives wealth a direction: the north, Kubera's quarter. The safe, cash box or locker stands in the north zone or against the north wall of the south-west room, opening toward the north — so that wealth, when it moves, moves into Kubera's keeping. In a shop, the cash counter obeys the same rule where the plan allows, kept clean, uncluttered and never used as a general dumping ledge; the transaction point is the shop's small altar and earns the same discipline. Dues, torn currency and dead stock are not stored with the cash. None of this conjures money — what it does, day after day, is enforce respect and order at exactly the point where a business's carelessness costs most.

The shop: entrance, counter, and display

Retail vastu concentrates on flow. The entrance follows the house rules — north and east favoured, wide, bright, unobstructed, and never blocked by the counter itself; the customer must be able to enter before they can buy. Display the heaviest stock along the south and west, keep the north-east light and open (a water feature or the shop's small shrine sits well there), and let the customer's natural walking path curve through the goods rather than dead-end at a wall. The owner or manager holds the south-west with a view of the door. Idols at the entrance face into the shop, welcoming what enters. And the oldest retail vastu of all: the shop, like the stove, should open every day it possibly can — regularity is a direction too.

The work-from-home desk

The pandemic-era question, answered by the same grammar at desk scale. Place the desk so you face east or north while working, with a wall — not a window, not the bedroom door — at your back. Keep the desk's north-east quarter light (lamp, water glass, the current page) and its south-west quarter weighted (files, reference, the finished work). Do not work facing directly into your own bed if the room permits otherwise — sleep and deadlines make poor eye contact — and give the workspace one boundary ritual, a cloth drawn over the desk or a lamp switched off, so the room can change shifts. Where career strain persists despite an honest setup, the question usually lives in the chart's 10th house and dasha rather than the furniture — and that combined reading, house plus horoscope, is where the vastu guide's method ends and mine begins.
