Vastu for Home: The Principles That Actually Matter

Vastu has been sold to this generation as a catalogue of fears — a toilet here dooms wealth, a mirror there invites quarrels. The shastra itself is calmer and far more intelligent: it is the science of orienting a dwelling to sun, wind, light and load, codified by people who watched how houses actually treat the families inside them. Let me give you home vastu the way it deserves to be given — principles first, placements second, and remedies that do not require demolition.

The logic: sun, wind, and the mandala

Vastu's compass is the sun's path. The north-east (Ishan) receives the gentle morning light — hence water, prayer and openness live there. The south and south-west (Nairritya) take the harsh afternoon sun and were traditionally built heavy and closed — hence weight, storage and the master's rest belong there. The south-east (Agneya) is the fire corner, home of the kitchen; the north-west (Vayavya) is the wind corner, suited to guests and movement. Over this the tradition lays the Vastu Purusha Mandala — the site imagined as a reclining cosmic being — a beautiful mnemonic for the same directional grammar. Read this way, vastu stops being superstition and reveals itself as climate-wise architecture with a sacred vocabulary.

The placements that genuinely matter

Forty-five years of house charts have taught me where vastu earns its keep. The main entrance — the house's mouth — matters most; north and east entries invite light and are classically favoured (the fuller logic is in the entrance guide). The kitchen belongs to the fire corner, ideally south-east. The master bedroom rests best in the stable south-west. The pooja space flowers in the north-east. Heavy storage south-west, water sources north-east, and the centre (Brahmasthan) kept light and open. Get these right and the house's vastu is substantially right — most remaining rules are refinements of these six decisions.

What matters less than the market says

Honesty requires the other list. Minor bathroom positions in a modern plumbed apartment, the direction you face while watching television, a mirror's wall, the colour of a curtain — these occupy vastu marketing far beyond their weight in the shastra. Classical vastu concerned itself with structure: slope, entrance, fire, water, weight, openness. A family should not live in dread of a flat's guest toilet. Nor should tenants believe vastu is only for owners — orientation of use (which room you sleep in, where you cook, where you pray) applies to any dwelling and costs nothing to align. Fear is the counterfeit currency of this field; measure any vastu advice by whether it explains its logic or merely threatens you.

Remedies without demolition

Most homes cannot be rebuilt, and the tradition knows it. The honest remedy sequence: first, reassign use — move the bedroom, relocate the pooja shelf, shift heavy storage; use follows vastu even when structure cannot. Second, correct the energies you can — light the dark corner, ventilate the sealed room, declutter the Brahmasthan, keep the north-east clean and the entrance welcoming. Third, symbolic corrections — a Vastu Purusha worship, mirrors and metals per tradition — as supplements, never substitutes. And where a genuine structural flaw meets a genuine life problem, read the residents' charts alongside the house: the same flat treats a strong-Saturn family and a weak-Moon family differently, which is why house and horoscope are best examined together.
