Vastu for the Home: 10 Principles for Harmony
Vastu Shastra is the ancient science of harmonising a built space with the energies of the five elements and the directions. Here are ten principles that benefit almost any home.
- Place the main entrance in the north, east, or north-east where possible.
- Keep the north-east corner light, clean and uncluttered — it is the zone of clarity.
- Site the kitchen in the south-east, the natural direction of fire.
- The master bedroom sits best in the south-west for stability.
- Sleep with the head to the south or east, never the north.
- Keep the centre of the home (Brahmasthan) open and free of heavy objects.
- Store water and place wells or tanks in the north-east.
- Heavy furniture and storage belong in the south and west.
- Let in natural light and air; avoid dark, damp corners.
- Repair leaks and broken fixtures promptly — stagnation drains a home’s energy.
Vastu does not fight nature. It arranges a home to flow with it.
Few homes can satisfy every rule, and they need not. Even a handful of these adjustments, made thoughtfully, can noticeably shift the feeling of a space.
