Vastu for Apartments: What You Can Fix When You Can't Rebuild

Classical vastu was written for houses built on open plots; most of my clients live nine floors up in a flat whose walls a builder fixed years ago. Does vastu still apply? Yes — but honestly applied, it changes shape. In an apartment, vastu becomes two skills: choosing well when you can choose, and assigning use wisely when you cannot. Both are entirely within your power, and neither requires touching a wall.

Choosing a flat: the five-minute vastu check

When selection is still open, check five things in order. Entrance direction — the flat's own door, not the building's gate; north and east entries are classically preferred. Kitchen corner — south-east is ideal, north-west acceptable. Master-bedroom position — south-west brings stability. Open/light zones — the north-east should be the flat's lighter, opener side (balconies and windows there are a gift); heavy blocks in the north-east are the flaw hardest to remedy later. The centre — a reasonably open middle beats a flat whose core is a toilet block. No flat scores perfectly; weigh the entrance, kitchen and north-east most heavily, and let the rest be negotiable.

Living in the flat you have: use-alignment

Where structure is fixed, use is free — and use carries most of the result. Sleep in the south-west room if one exists, children study facing east or north, the pooja shelf goes to the flat's north-east (a clean shelf serves where no room exists), heavy cupboards migrate south and south-west, and the north-east corner is kept light, clean and uncluttered. Cook facing east where the kitchen allows. Keep the geometric centre of the flat free of storage heaps. These assignments cost nothing, offend no landlord, and quietly implement the same directional grammar a custom-built home would — which is why I tell tenants plainly: vastu is as much yours as any owner's.

The common flat flaws, triaged

Real flats bring recurring questions, so here is the triage. Toilet in the north-east: the genuinely weighty flaw — keep it scrupulously clean, ventilated, door closed, and strengthen the remaining north-east with light and water elements. Kitchen in the north-east: also weighty — cook facing east, keep the corner's sanctity elsewhere in the flat. South-west entrance: manageable — strengthen the door, keep it bright and well-kept. Bedroom over an unknown floor plan below: not your concern; vastu reads your dwelling. Mirrors, colours, aquarium positions: refinements, not emergencies. The rule of proportion: structural contradictions of fire, water and weight deserve attention; decorative details deserve five minutes, not five sleepless nights.

Balconies, floors, and the questions nobody answers

Three apartment-specific clarities. Balconies: a north or east balcony is your flat's lung — keep it open and green rather than converting it to storage; a south-west balcony serves better enclosed or weighted with plants in heavy pots. Floor height: the shastra has no quarrel with the ninth floor; light, air and the flat's internal geometry matter, not altitude. Shared walls and neighbours: your vastu boundary is your own door — the building's compound vastu affects common fortune lightly, your flat's arrangement affects your household directly. When a specific persistent trouble shadows a home — sleep, money, quarrels — that is the moment to read the flat and the residents' kundlis together, because the same floor plan sits differently on different charts.
