Medini Jyotish: The Astrology of Nations, Weather and World Events

Most people meet astrology through their own kundli, and assume the whole science is personal. It is not. The older and grander branch is Medini Jyotish — from medini, the earth — the astrology of collectives: kingdoms and nations, rainfall and harvests, markets, epidemics, and the temper of an era. When people ask whether astrology "saw" a public event, Medini is the branch they are actually asking about, usually without knowing its name.

The classical toolkit

Medini Jyotish does not read any individual's chart. Its instruments are charts of moments that belong to everyone. The chief ones: the varsha-pravesh or new-year chart, cast for the moment the year begins (classically Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), from which the tradition even appoints a planetary "cabinet" for the year — a king (varshesh) and ministers whose natures colour the twelve months. Then the sankranti charts, cast when the Sun enters each sign — the Mesha Sankranti chart especially is read for the season ahead, as our transits guide outlines. Then eclipses, whose path and nakshatra are classically mapped to regions and their affairs. And finally the slow conjunctions — Jupiter and Saturn meeting, Saturn and Rahu, and similar — treated as the punctuation marks of decades.

Regions, signs and the old geography

Classical texts, above all Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, assign regions, rivers, commodities and communities to signs and nakshatras — a sacred geography through which a planetary event is localised. The method is ancient and the map is ancient too, which every honest practitioner admits: applying a sixth-century atlas to modern borders is interpretation, not arithmetic. Done humbly, it still yields a remarkably coherent way of thinking about collective weather — literal and figurative.

What Medini can and cannot do

Here is the honesty the subject deserves. Medini Jyotish offers climate, not forecast: the character of a period, the themes a region may live through, the tone of a year. It does not date disasters, and the tradition's own texts hedge their omens with ranges and conditions. Anyone claiming pinpoint public predictions is performing, not practising. What the branch genuinely gives is perspective — why eras feel the way they feel — and for the individual, context: your personal dasha always outweighs the collective sky, which is why two neighbours live the same national year so differently. That intersection — collective period meeting personal chart — is where a real consultation works, and where this old branch becomes quietly practical.
