Hartalika Teej 2026: The Date, Tithi and Vrat

Hartalika Teej 2026 is kept on Monday, 14 September 2026 in most of India, on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. In parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar it is observed a day earlier, on Sunday, 13 September — both follow their own regional reckoning of the tithi. The fast is traditionally kept nirjala (without water) by married women for their husband’s wellbeing, and by unmarried women praying for a good match.
Hartalika Teej takes its name from harat (abduction) and alika (friend) — the tradition that Parvati’s companions carried her away to the forest so she could continue her penance for Shiva rather than be married elsewhere. The vrat commemorates that resolve, and it is one of the few fasts kept without even water.
In 2026 the observance falls on the same day as Ganesh Chaturthi in most of the country, which is unusual and worth planning around if your household keeps both.
