Keeping Chhath without a river
The question that comes up most from families abroad is what to do without a ghat. The tradition is more accommodating here than people expect: where no river is reachable, the arghya is offered standing in whatever clean water is available — a pool, a garden tub, even a filled vessel — facing the Sun. Communities in New Jersey, Chicago, London and Toronto have kept it this way for years.
What is not negotiable is the discipline: the nirjala fast of the third day, the purity of the prasad, and offering at the actual moment the Sun meets the horizon where you stand.
