Astrocartography and the Vedic View: What Actually Changes When You Move

By Dr. R.P. Sharma, Vedic astrologer since 1979 · Ph.D. & M.A. Acharya

"Would my life be better in Canada?" In forty-five years I have heard that question in a hundred accents, and the modern internet has given it a glamorous name: astrocartography. Since people increasingly arrive asking about it, let me explain what it is, what the Vedic tradition does instead, and what actually changes when you change your pin code.

Astrocartography, honestly described

Astrocartography is a twentieth-century Western technique — systematised by Jim Lewis in the 1970s — that draws your birth moment onto a world map: for each planet, lines mark where on earth that planet would have been rising, setting, or at the zenith or nadir at your birth instant. Live near your "Jupiter line," the theory goes, and Jupiter's themes colour life there. It is visually seductive and psychologically interesting. It is not a Vedic method, and I present it as what it is: a modern mapping of a real astronomical fact — that the angles of your chart depend on location.

The Vedic parallel: relocation and the unchanged kundli

That underlying fact the Vedic tradition has always known. Your birth chart never changes — it is a photograph of one moment from one place, and the dashas flowing from your Moon's nakshatra travel with you to any continent. What shifts with geography is emphasis: cast the same moment from a different longitude and latitude and the lagna and house cusps move, so a relocated chart shows which departments of the same life come to the foreground there. The classical eye adds its own instruments: the ninth and twelfth houses and their lords for foreign fortune and residence abroad, the fourth for homeland and peace of mind, the running dasha for when a move ripens — the same framework our article on foreign travel in the chart details.

My counsel on place and fate

Here is the balance I hold clients to. Place is real: the same person does live somewhat differently in Faridabad, Frankfurt and Fremont, and the relocated emphasis often describes the difference uncannily well. But place is the stage, not the script. A Saturn dasha crosses the ocean with you; unfinished inner work checks in at every airport. So the honest order of questions is: first, does your chart promise foreign residence and is the dasha ripe for it — then, among the places on your table for real-world reasons, which suits your chart's emphasis best. Geography as fine-tuning, never as escape. Asked in that order, the question "would my life be better there?" finally has an answerable shape — and the answer sits in your own kundli, not on a poster of lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is astrocartography part of Vedic astrology?

No — it is a modern Western technique (systematised in the 1970s) mapping where planets were angular at your birth moment. Vedic astrology addresses the same underlying fact through relocation of the lagna and houses, plus the 9th/12th-house and dasha analysis for foreign matters.

Does my birth chart change if I move abroad?

Never. The kundli is fixed at birth and your dashas travel with you. What changes is house emphasis: the same moment cast for the new place shifts the lagna and cusps, showing which areas of the same life come forward there.

Which houses show settlement abroad in Vedic astrology?

Classically the twelfth house for residence in distant lands, the ninth for long journeys and fortune, with the fourth (homeland, inner peace) and the running dasha deciding the timing and the trade-offs.

Can moving to a 'better line' fix my problems?

Place fine-tunes expression; it does not rewrite the chart. A difficult dasha accompanies you anywhere. The sound order is: check the chart's promise and timing for relocation first, then choose among realistic destinations — never move as an escape from a period.
