Astrocartography and the Vedic View: What Actually Changes When You Move

"Would my life be better in Canada?" In forty-five years I have heard that question in a hundred accents, and the modern internet has given it a glamorous name: astrocartography. Since people increasingly arrive asking about it, let me explain what it is, what the Vedic tradition does instead, and what actually changes when you change your pin code.

Astrocartography, honestly described

Astrocartography is a twentieth-century Western technique — systematised by Jim Lewis in the 1970s — that draws your birth moment onto a world map: for each planet, lines mark where on earth that planet would have been rising, setting, or at the zenith or nadir at your birth instant. Live near your "Jupiter line," the theory goes, and Jupiter's themes colour life there. It is visually seductive and psychologically interesting. It is not a Vedic method, and I present it as what it is: a modern mapping of a real astronomical fact — that the angles of your chart depend on location.

The Vedic parallel: relocation and the unchanged kundli

That underlying fact the Vedic tradition has always known. Your birth chart never changes — it is a photograph of one moment from one place, and the dashas flowing from your Moon's nakshatra travel with you to any continent. What shifts with geography is emphasis: cast the same moment from a different longitude and latitude and the lagna and house cusps move, so a relocated chart shows which departments of the same life come to the foreground there. My counsel on place and fate

Here is the balance I hold clients to. Place is real: the same person does live somewhat differently in Faridabad, Frankfurt and Fremont, and the relocated emphasis often describes the difference uncannily well. But place is the stage, not the script. A Saturn dasha crosses the ocean with you; unfinished inner work checks in at every airport. So the honest order of questions is: first, does your chart promise foreign residence and is the dasha ripe for it — then, among the places on your table for real-world reasons, which suits your chart's emphasis best. Geography as fine-tuning, never as escape. Asked in that order, the question "would my life be better there?" finally has an answerable shape — and the answer sits in your own kundli, not on a poster of lines.
