- Square off the main built area with a compound wall or the building line, leaving the extra front wedge as garden, parking or open space.
- Keep the south-west of the built area heavy and solid; keep the north-east open and clean.
- Avoid placing the main bedroom in the narrow back corner.

- Which side faces the road — the facing direction matters as much as the shape.
- Cuts or extensions at the corners, especially north-east and south-west.
