A panchang is easy to read in either language once the names are matched: twelve lunar months from Chaitra to Phalguna, each split into Shukla Paksha (waxing) and Krishna Paksha (waning); fifteen tithis per paksha, from Pratipada to Purnima or Amavasya; and seven weekdays named after the planets — Ravivar (Sunday) for the Sun to Shanivar (Saturday) for Saturn.

North India counts each month from full moon to full moon (purnimanta); much of west and south India counts from new moon to new moon (amanta). The bright fortnight has the same name in both; the dark fortnight belongs to different month names.

1 Pratipada, 2 Dwitiya, 3 Tritiya, 4 Chaturthi, 5 Panchami, 6 Shashthi, 7 Saptami, 8 Ashtami, 9 Navami, 10 Dashami, 11 Ekadashi, 12 Dwadashi, 13 Trayodashi, 14 Chaturdashi, 15 Purnima (full moon) or Amavasya (new moon). A tithi is 12° of the Moon’s lead over the Sun, so its length varies from about 19 to 26 hours.
