How the Karwa Chauth fast is kept, from sargi to moonrise
- Sargi before dawn: the meal from the mother-in-law, eaten in the Brahma muhurat (4:55 to 5:43 am in Delhi); nothing, not even water, is taken after sunrise in the strict nirjala fast.
- Day: mehendi, the new saree or lehenga, and the karwa (the clay pot) prepared with water, sweets and the thali.
- Evening puja, 5:38 to 6:56 pm: the Karwa Chauth katha is heard in a group, the karwas are exchanged, and Gauri, Ganesha and Chandra are worshipped with the thali.
- Moonrise: the moon is seen through the chhalni (sieve), arghya of water is offered, the husband's face is seen through the same sieve, and the first sip of water and first morsel come from his hand. Only then does the fast end.
Dos and don'ts for Karwa Chauth 2026
- Do break the fast at your own city's moonrise, never at India's; the tables above give the exact local minute.
- Do keep the evening puja inside the muhurat where possible; if the group katha runs late, the moon sighting is what completes the vrat.
- Don't rely on the moon being visible at the listed minute in cloud or between tall buildings; the time is when it crosses the horizon, and it may take 10 to 20 minutes more to clear rooftops.
- Don't keep a nirjala fast through pregnancy or illness; tradition allows the phalahar (fruit and water) form, and the vrat is still counted.
