Kamala (Kamalatmika) is the tenth of the ten Mahavidyas — the goddess of the lotus, a tantric form of Lakshmi shown seated on a lotus and bathed by elephants. Her mantra is chanted for prosperity, harmony at home and inner contentment. In later Jyotish–tantra correspondences Kamala is linked with Venus, so her worship is often advised on Fridays. She is a deity, not a condition of the birth chart.
Who is Kamala?
Among the ten Mahavidyas (Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala), Kamala is the gentlest and most outward-looking: abundance, beauty and good fortune that flow from purity. Her image has four arms — two holding lotuses and two in the gestures of blessing and fearlessness — with elephants pouring water over her.
The mantra
A commonly chanted Kamala mantra is:
Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseeda Praseeda Shreem Hreem Shreem Om Mahalakshmyai Namah
The short form is the seed syllable Shreem, the bija of Lakshmi. Traditional sadhana of the long mantra is learnt from a teacher.
How to chant
- Friday or a Purnima evening; bathe and wear clean white or pink clothes.
- Light a ghee lamp, offer lotus or white flowers and a sweet.
- Chant 108 times with a lotus-seed (kamalgatta) or sphatik mala.
- Keep the home clean and give food or sweets to girls or women in need — Lakshmi is traditionally pleased by cleanliness and charity.
Astrological use
Kamala worship is used as a support when Venus or the 2nd and 11th houses (money and gains) are weak, and in Venus periods. It is a devotional practice; for money matters it works alongside practical planning, not in place of it.
