Gemstones by Planet: The Nine Ratnas and Who They Serve

Here is the reference every gemstone conversation eventually needs: the nine grahas, their ratnas, and the traditional protocol for each — metal, finger, weekday — together with the one thing shop counters omit: who each stone actually serves. Keep one principle beside the table throughout: a stone amplifies its planet, so it belongs only on a hand whose chart wants that planet amplified.

The luminaries: ruby and pearl

Ruby (manik) — the Sun. Worn in gold on the ring finger, begun on a Sunday. It supports vitality, confidence, standing with authority and the father's significations, and classically suits charts where the Sun rules favourable houses — Leo lagna above all — when Surya is weak. It is avoided where the Sun is a functional malefic or already fierce. Pearl (moti) — the Moon. Worn in silver on the little finger, begun on a Monday. It steadies the mind, sleep and emotional weather, and suits charts with a favourable but afflicted Moon — Cancer lagna especially. A pearl on a mind that needs firmness rather than softening, however, can increase passivity; even the gentlest stone obeys the amplifier rule.

The benefics: emerald, yellow sapphire, diamond

Emerald (panna) — Mercury. Gold or silver, little finger, Wednesday. It sharpens intellect, speech, memory and commerce — natural for Gemini and Virgo lagnas with a weak Budh, and for students and traders whose charts agree. Yellow sapphire (pukhraj) — Jupiter. Gold, index finger, Thursday. The most-prescribed stone in India, supporting wisdom, wealth, marriage and progeny where Guru serves the chart — Sagittarius and Pisces lagnas foremost. Its popularity is exactly why verification matters: Jupiter is not a benefic for every ascendant. Diamond (heera) — Venus. Gold or platinum, middle or ring finger, Friday. It refines relationships, comfort and the arts for charts where Shukra serves — Taurus and Libra lagnas classically — with white sapphire as the honest substitute.

The hard teachers: coral and blue sapphire

Red coral (moonga) — Mars. Gold or copper, ring finger, Tuesday. It feeds courage, initiative and recovery, suiting Aries and Scorpio lagnas with a weakened Mars; on a chart already running hot it adds heat, so temper is part of the prescription. Blue sapphire (neelam) — Saturn. Silver or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday. The most powerful and most mishandled ratna: where Saturn is a functional benefic — Capricorn, Aquarius, and famously the Venus-ruled lagnas Taurus and Libra — a sound neelam supports discipline, career and endurance. Where Saturn troubles the lagna, it is simply not worn. This is the one stone for which the traditional trial period is non-negotiable, and the full logic sits with Saturn itself.

The shadow planets: hessonite and cat's eye

Hessonite (gomed) — Rahu, silver, middle finger, Saturday; cat's eye (lehsunia) — Ketu, silver, ring or little finger, traditionally begun on a Thursday or per prescription. The nodal stones are prescribed the most cautiously of all nine, usually to steady a difficult Rahu or Ketu period rather than to amplify ambition — and only after the node's role in the chart is understood, since nodal fears are the market's favourite selling tool.
