“Dhwaja” means a flag — a symbol of victory and public standing. Online definitions of Dhwaja yoga (for example Mars in the 9th with Jupiter in the 10th) do not match any standard classical rule and contradict each other. Recognition and rise are read reliably from the 10th house and its lord, the 9th–10th lord link, planets with directional strength in the 10th, and the dasha.
How the yoga forms
Dhwaja yoga is not one of the commonly used classical yogas, and the definitions published online contradict one another. Versions you may meet include: Mars in the 9th with Jupiter in the 10th; benefics in the lagna with malefics in the 8th. Rather than lean on a name, it is more reliable to read rise and recognition directly from the chart, as below.
Reliable signs of rise and recognition
- The 10th house and its lord: a strong 10th lord in a kendra or trikona, or in its own or exaltation sign.
- Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga: the 9th and 10th lords together, exchanging signs or aspecting each other — see Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga.
- Directional strength: the Sun or Mars in the 10th house.
- Amala yoga: a benefic in the 10th from the lagna or Moon.
- Dasha: the 10th lord’s or a 10th-house planet’s period brings the rise.
Reading it in practice
A chart with a strong 10th lord and a 9th–10th link usually shows a clear rise in the dasha of those lords, often around the late twenties to forties. Malefics in the 10th give drive and authority with pressure; benefics give a smoother, respected rise. Saturn aspecting the 10th tends to delay but stabilise recognition.
