What is Samudrika Shastra?
Samudrika Shastra is the Indian study of lakshanas — physical marks, features and proportion. Mukha samudrika, the reading of the face, is one branch of it; palmistry is another. It grew up beside Jyotish and the two are often discussed together, but they work from different material: Jyotish from the moment of birth, Samudrika from the body.
Used carefully, face reading describes temperament in broad strokes. It does not give dates and it does not decide outcomes; for those, the birth chart, the dasha and the transits are read.
What do the main facial features signify?
- Forehead (lalata) — read for intellect and early life. A broad, high forehead is traditionally linked with a studious mind; a narrower one with a practical turn.
- Eyes (netra) — read for the emotional nature, the Moon's domain. Bright, open eyes are linked with warmth and sensitivity; deep-set eyes with reserve and reflection.
- Nose (nasika) — read for self-confidence and will, the Sun's domain; a straight, well-proportioned nose is the classical ideal.
- Lips (oshtha) — read for affection and the enjoyment of comfort, Venus's domain.
- Chin (chibuka) — read for resolve and endurance in later life.
