Rudraksha is the dried seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, revered as Shiva’s bead. Its type is the number of natural lines (mukhis) running from top to bottom — most commonly 1 to 14, with 5-mukhi by far the most common and the safest choice for most people. In the standard scheme 1-mukhi is linked with the Sun, 2 with the Moon, 3 Mars, 4 Mercury, 5 Jupiter, 6 Venus, 7 Saturn, 8 Rahu and 9 Ketu.
What rudraksha is
The name joins Rudra (Shiva) and aksha (eye or tear); devotional texts describe the beads as Shiva’s tears of compassion. The seeds grow mainly in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal and India and in Indonesia. Nepal beads tend to be larger, Indonesian ones smaller; both are genuine rudraksha.
Types by mukhi
Beads are grouped by the number of mukhis. How common each is matters for price and for fakes:
- Common: 5-mukhi (the large majority of beads), then 4, 6, 3 and 7.
- Less common: 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
- Rare: 14 and above, Gauri Shankar (two joined beads) and Ganesha beads. A round 1-mukhi bead from Nepal is extremely rare; most “1-mukhi” on sale is the half-moon type from South India or is carved.
Higher mukhis are not “stronger” in a simple sense; each is linked with a different planet or deity.
Which bead to choose
- For general prayer and calm, a 5-mukhi mala or bracelet suits almost everyone.
- For a planet-specific remedy, choose the bead of a planet that is favourable but weak in your chart — strengthening a planet that rules difficult houses for your lagna is not helpful.
- Rare beads are costly and often faked; insist on a lab report.

Choosing a genuine bead
- Count the mukhis (natural lines running top to bottom); they should be continuous and natural, not carved.
- Look for joins, glue or filled cracks, especially in rare mukhis.
- The “floating in water” and “copper coin” tests are not reliable; an X-ray or CT report from a reputable gem-testing lab is.
- Buy from a seller who gives a lab report and a return policy.
Wearing it
- Thread it in silk or wool, or set it in silver or gold; wear on the neck or right wrist.
- Begin on a Monday morning (or the day of its planet) after bathing: wash it in clean water, light a lamp and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” 108 times, or the bead’s own mantra.
- Keep it clean; many families remove it before sleeping and at places of mourning.
