Why the south-west
Vastu wants the south-west to be the heaviest and highest part of a building, and the north-east the lightest and lowest. A full overhead tank is one of the heaviest loads on a roof, so it sits naturally in the south-west. The same logic is why underground water belongs in the north-east.
Practical details
- Raise the tank on a platform rather than placing it directly on the slab, and keep it leak-free — dampness on the roof is a structural problem first.
- Light colours (white, cream, light blue) keep the water cooler; black tanks heat up in summer.
- Keep the area under and around the tank clean; no stagnant water.
If the tank is in the north-east
- Plan to shift it to the south-west or west during the next repair.
- Meanwhile keep it as small as practical, raised and leak-free, and keep the rest of the north-east clean and open.
- Make the south-west heavier — taller parapet, storage, or a raised structure.
