What retrograde means in Jyotish
Retrograde motion is an apparent reversal seen from Earth as it overtakes, or is overtaken by, Mercury. Classical texts treat a retrograde planet as having high motional strength (cheshta bala), so a natal retrograde Mercury is not “bad”: it often gives a reflective, original or rethinking mind. In transit, the period favours review, repair and completion more than brand-new starts.
