Mercury (Budh) in Vedic Astrology: Intellect, Speech and Commerce

Mercury is the youngest planet in the old stories and the busiest one in a modern chart. Budh governs the faculties this age runs on — analysis, speech, writing, negotiation, code, commerce — which is why a well-placed Mercury today converts into livelihood more directly than almost any other strength. It is also the most impressionable of the planets, and reading it well means reading its company.

What Mercury governs

Budh is the karaka of intellect, speech, learning, calculation, trade, writing and wit. It rules Gemini (Mithuna) and Virgo (Kanya), and Virgo is also its sign of exaltation — the only planet exalted in its own sign, a hint that Mercury at its best is discrimination perfected. It is debilitated in Pisces, where the analytical mind dissolves into the intuitive. Mercury signifies the nervous system, the skin, the voice; among people it signifies students, accountants, traders, writers and messengers. Every profession that lives by words or numbers files its papers with Budh.

The chameleon: Mercury takes its company's colour

Classically Mercury is a benefic that becomes what it associates with — benefic with benefics, sharp-edged with malefics. Mercury with Jupiter gives the scholar's breadth; with Venus, the artist's polish; with Saturn, the auditor's patience; with Mars, the debater's blade; with Rahu, the salesman's daring. None of these is a flaw — they are specialisations. The famous Budhaditya yoga, Mercury with the Sun, gives intelligence with authority when Mercury is not too close to the Sun's degree. This is why two people with Mercury in the same sign can think so differently: the sign is the school, but the conjunction is the teacher.

Combustion, retrogression, and the anxious mind

Because Mercury never strays far from the Sun, it is combust more often than any planet — and combustion is the most over-read affliction in modern practice. A combust Mercury within a degree or two of the Sun genuinely struggles to be heard; a loosely combust one often just thinks faster than it speaks. Retrograde Mercury in a birth chart inclines the mind to revisit, revise and self-edit — a writer's temperament more than a curse. Real Mercury affliction shows as scattered speech, anxious overthinking, disputes through documents, and carelessness with detail. As always, degree, dignity and aspects decide; the label alone decides nothing.

Mercury's remedies are conduct first: keep your word precisely, finish what you write, learn something new deliberately, and clean up your speech — Budh is strengthened every time language is used with care.
