Vighnaharta (“remover of obstacles”) is a name of Lord Ganesha, and the Vighnaharta yantra is a Ganesha yantra — a sacred geometric diagram, usually engraved on copper — used in worship before new beginnings and to ease obstacles. It is not a feature of the birth chart. Some astrologers pair it with the ascendant (lagna) lord or with a Ketu or Mercury period, since both are linked with Ganesha.
What the yantra is
A yantra is a diagram that represents a deity, used as a focus for mantra and worship. The Ganesha yantra usually carries a central bindu, triangles, a lotus and the beej syllable Gam. Copper is the traditional metal because it is easy to keep clean and is used in daily puja vessels.
When it is used
- Before a new home, business, course or journey.
- During a Ketu or Mercury dasha, which tradition links with Ganesha.
- When work keeps stalling at the start — alongside practical steps, not in place of them.
How to install it
- Choose a Wednesday or Chaturthi with a good muhurat.
- Clean the yantra with water (or raw milk, then water) and place it on a clean cloth in the puja area, facing east or north; the north-east corner is preferred.
- Offer red flowers, durva grass and a lamp.
- Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah 108 times.
- Light a lamp before it daily; clean it gently, never with harsh chemicals.
