Kemadruma (Kemdrum) Dosha

The rule

Count from the Moon’s sign. If both the sign before it (12th from the Moon) and the sign after it (2nd from the Moon) are empty of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, the Moon is said to be “unsupported” — Kemadruma. A planet sitting with the Moon in the same sign is not one of these two positions, though many astrologers treat it as support too.

Its opposites are Sunapha (planet in the 2nd from the Moon), Anapha (planet in the 12th) and Durudhara (planets in both).

Common cancellations

• Any planet (other than the Sun, Rahu, Ketu) in a kendra — 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th — from the Moon.
• A planet in a kendra from the ascendant.
• The Moon itself in a kendra from the ascendant, or aspected by Jupiter.
• A strong, bright Moon (near full) in a friendly or exaltation sign.

Because these are common, a full, uncancelled Kemadruma is much rarer than the bare rule suggests.

Effects

Classical texts describe an unsupported Moon as giving worry, loneliness, money that does not stay, and effort without backing from others. In practice it shows mostly in the Moon’s dasha or antardasha and when the Moon is also weak (dark, debilitated in Scorpio, or afflicted).

Remedies

• Shiva worship on Mondays; water or milk on the Shivling.
• Chandra mantra Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah, 108 times on Mondays.
• Respect and care for your mother; give rice, milk or white cloth on Mondays.
• Pearl only after a chart check — it is not right for every ascendant.
