Jupiter (Guru) in Vedic Astrology: Wisdom, Wealth and Grace

If Saturn is the judge of the chart, Jupiter is its advocate. Guru — the teacher of the gods — is the planet astrologers quietly look for first, because wherever Jupiter touches a chart, it protects, expands and forgives. In forty-five years of practice I have seen difficult charts carried to good lives on the strength of one well-placed Jupiter, and comfortable charts squandered where Guru was weak. Understanding this planet is understanding where grace enters your life.

What Jupiter governs

Guru is the karaka of wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, teachers, faith and expansion. It rules Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meena), is exalted in Cancer (Karka) and debilitated in Capricorn (Makar). Jupiter is the heaviest benefic: where malefics constrict, Guru enlarges — knowledge into judgment, money into generosity, belief into steadiness. In a man's chart it also signifies the husband's qualities in traditional matching; in every chart it signifies the guru, the counsel one receives, and the capacity to receive it. A chart's optimism, its ethical instinct and its luck in the old-fashioned sense all sit in Jupiter's ledger.

The three aspects: how Guru protects

Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, but Jupiter also casts its full glance on the 5th and 9th — the trikona aspects. This is why astrologers say Guru's drishti is a blessing wherever it falls: the houses it touches receive judgment, protection and timely help. A difficult 8th house calmed by Jupiter's aspect behaves very differently from one left alone; a Moon aspected by Guru gives a mind that rights itself after every storm. When I examine any problem in a chart — health, marriage, money — one of my first questions is simply: does Jupiter see it? The answer often decides how much fear the problem deserves.

Jupiter in strength and in weakness

A strong Jupiter — exalted, in own sign, in a kendra or trikona, or dignified in the navamsha — gives sound judgment, respected counsel, children who bring joy, and wealth that arrives with peace attached. A weak or afflicted Guru shows as poor judgment more than poor luck: over-promising, misplaced faith, disputes with teachers or gurus, and delays in progeny. Debilitation in Makar is softened by Neecha Bhanga conditions and by Saturn's own dignity, so no verdict is issued from the sign alone. And because Jupiter signifies the counsel we accept, a weak Guru's first remedy is practical: choose advisers slowly and honour the honest ones.

Transits, Guru's year, and remedies

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign, and its transit over the natal Moon, the ascendant, or the 5th, 9th and 11th houses marks seasons when doors open — marriages fixed, children born, positions gained. In mid-2026 Jupiter entered sidereal Karka, its sign of exaltation, a transit classically counted among the most benevolent of its cycle; what it delivers for you personally depends on which houses Cancer rules in your chart and the dasha running beneath it. Guru's remedies are in its own image: study, teaching, charity on Thursdays, service to one's teachers and elders, and worship of Brihaspati or Lord Vishnu.
