A lajjit (lajjita, “ashamed”) planet is one placed in the 5th house together with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars. It is one of six avasthas (planetary moods) described by Parashara, alongside garvita, kshudhita, trishita, mudita and kshobhita. A lajjita planet is read as giving trouble in 5th-house matters — children, studies and judgement — during its periods.
The rule
Take any planet in the 5th house of the birth chart. If Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars is in the same house, that planet is lajjita. The 5th house is the house of children, intelligence and past merit, so the “shame” shows mainly there.
It is not formed by the 6th, 8th or 12th lords, nor by water signs — that last idea belongs to trishita avastha.

Effects
- Delays or worries about children, or strain in a child’s life during the planet’s dasha.
- Poor judgement or loss through speculation.
- Interrupted studies or loss of interest in spiritual practice.
The strength of the planet, Jupiter’s aspect on the 5th house and the 5th lord’s dignity decide how much of this is seen.
Remedies
- Mantra of the lajjita planet on its weekday, and of the afflicting planet (for example the Rahu mantra if Rahu is the cause).
- Worship for the 5th house: Santana Gopala mantra for children; Saraswati for studies.
- Avoid speculation and gambling in the planet’s dasha.
