Om Shum Shukraya Namah: The Venus Mantra

Meaning, word by word

• Om — the primal sound.
• Shum — the seed (bija) syllable of Venus.
• Shukraya — to Shukra, the bright one, teacher of the asuras and the planet Venus.
• Namah — I bow.

The longer beej form is Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah.

What Venus governs

• Marriage, romance and harmony between partners.
• Comfort, vehicles, good food, clothes and home décor.
• Art, music, design and beauty work.
• Steady income through Venus businesses — fashion, hospitality, luxury goods.

How and when to chant

1. Begin on a Friday of the bright fortnight, after a bath, facing east.
2. Wear white or light colours; offer white flowers and a ghee lamp to Lakshmi.
3. Chant 108 times with a sphatik (crystal) mala, daily or every Friday.
4. Days when the Moon is in Venus’s nakshatras — Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha — are also favoured.

Who should chant it

It helps when Venus is weak or afflicted — debilitated in Virgo, combust near the Sun, or joined by malefics — or when you run a Venus mahadasha or antardasha. For Taurus and Libra ascendants Venus rules the chart, and for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants it is the yogakaraka, so its mantra suits them well. Diamond or white sapphire should be worn only after a full chart check.
