It is traditionally performed on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to Mula, or on a later Mula nakshatra day. Why the shanti is done
Mula sits right after the water–fire junction (gandanta) between Scorpio and Sagittarius, so a Moon in its first pada is treated as sensitive in Gandmool tradition. Timing
- Best: the 27th day after birth, when the Moon is again in Mula.
- If missed: any later day when the Moon transits Mula (about once every 27 days), with a good tithi and weekday from the panchang.
- The family’s priest fixes the exact muhurat.
What the ritual involves
- Ganesha puja and sankalpa in the child’s name.
- Offerings into the fire with mantras for Ketu (the nakshatra lord) and for the nakshatra deity, plus the navagraha mantras.
- Often 27 kinds of herbs and water from several sources for the child’s bath, and charity at the end.
