The northeast is the water zone and the east receives the morning sun, so both are kept open and light — a large mango there blocks exactly what those zones are kept clear for.
The northwest and southeast can take smaller trees if they stand well clear of the building.
How far from the house should it be?
- Shadow: its shadow should not fall on the house between about 9 am and 3 pm.
- Roots: far enough that roots cannot reach the foundation, the plumbing or the compound wall.
- Entrance: it should not stand in front of the main door or block the path to it.
